App Description: An easy-to-use accurate visual chromatic tuner for your instruments. Best for higher pitch instruments such as the violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, or oboe, but will also work well using the harmonic frequencies of lower pitch instruments too.

How We Use It: We have an exhibit called Pipes of Pan. It essentially consists of tubes of different lengths that visitors can put their ears to and hear what pitch is created. The floor staff, after assisting the visitor to understand that the lengths will help determine the pitch, and helping them understand where the sound is coming from, uses the app to help visitors try to figure out what each pitch is. Visitors attempted to whistle the pitch they heard and see what comes up.

Project Brief

21-Tech partners study and share the effective use of Personal Mobile Technologies (PMTs) by gallery facilitators in their work with visitors. The initial three years (2011-2013) of 21-Tech are funded in large part by a 21st Century Museum Professionals award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The project is led by the Children’s Museum of Houston in partnership with Lawrence Hall of Science, New York Hall of Science, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, and Sciencenter.
